It's more than a Mood swing!

When you are having a bad day and you are all cranky, and then suddenly someone jumps in and say ’ARE YOU ON YOUR PERIODS?’ with a slight laugh. I think that's the most offensive joke of the century.
Periods are no joke, from hormones fluctuations to emotional fluctuations. We go through it all every month. And let's not get started with the physicality of it.

The SASSJOURNAL (Silvy Mehta) said ”I get horrible cramps and abdomen aches a day before and on the first day or my periods upto the point where I cannot even stand straight and i puke all day bcz of such intense pain.I have to end up taking pain killers every month if i have to continue doing the regular chores. Don’t even ask about the mood swings and cravings i get a week before πŸ˜‚ I sometimes experience breast tenderness as well.”
I asked many girls on my Instagram and they said, how bad there cramps are, pain is mostly unbearable. Girls suffering from PCOS go through the worse, I tell you.
But the neglected and joked about aspect of PERIODS is PMS those who think mood swings are just women over- reacting let me enlighten you with the process of PMS.
PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME (PMS) is a condition affecting 90% of the menstruating women physically and emotionally. Levels of estrogen and progesterone increases during certain times of the month with the increase in hormones comes- irritability, mood swings and even anxiety. Unbalanced level of serotonin even causes depression during this period.

Menstrual cycle is a 28 days process, normally. Ovulation which is egg releasing from the ovaries takes place on day 14 and the actual bleeding/menstruation starts on day 28. And the PMS begin around day 14 and lasts till the menstruation starts.
So out of 30 days we can only feel normal for only 14- 15 days  the rest of the days our hormones are all over the place.

Out of which 32% of the women  suffers from moderate to intense PMS. And around 3-8% reports for PMDD which is Pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder. It's more than a mood swing normally caused due to low level of serotonin, it controls mood situations, also pain and imbalance in hormone levels may cause decreased in serotonin level thus resulting in PMDD.
These are few main symptoms I found online-
Pain areas: in the breast, muscles, or pelvis
Mood: mood swings, sadness, anger, anxiety, hopelessness, or panic attack
Sleep: excess sleepiness or insomnia
Behavioural: irritability or crying
Also common: appetite changes, bloating, depression, diminished interest in usual activities, economic or social dysfunction due to symptoms, fatigue, feeling overwhelmed, food craving, headache, increased sensitivity to rejection, lack of concentration, self-critical thoughts, water retention, or weight gain.

While researching about this topic I came through some cases which includes suicidal thoughts and even self harm which is serious. So if you relate to these symptoms rush to a doctor or educate yourself about this particular condition, take precautions and know it’s not a bad life or bad day its just your hormones messing up with your head.
Other than that we already are pretty strong humans, its unreal how we go through a lot and still make it seem so smooth and go about life like warriors. Kudos to all you beautiful ladies and take care of yourself.
If you are a man reading this, welcome to our not so glamorous life and be nice to women around you.
Thank you,
Until next time 🧑
